2013 has been a good year for much of the business community, says President and CEO Scott Donald.

The economy is generally strong, and construction activity continues, he says. However, the use of bonds on a national basis continues to be challenged.

“Despite the challenge, Western Surety will realize 15% growth in premiums in 2013,” Scott says, “We're likely one of the few major sureties to have any sort of increase.

“We're also seeing activity in the construction industry as it moves to bigger projects and larger construction firms.

“There have also been changes in personnel within Western Surety this year – some staff changes, and, of course, the heartbreaking death of our colleague Arden Giesbrecht in August. Certainly it's been a unique year for us in terms of human resources. There have been big shoes to fill, with one position in the Toronto office still open at year-end.”

Scott says he has been focused on bringing in new people who fit Western Surety's service culture.

“The people we look for appreciate the way we relate to clients. We do things differently here, because we're Canada's exclusive surety-only business. And we're a family-run business with family-based values.

“Our people aren't part of a conglomerate. They're at the front lines, working one-on-one with our clients.

“The people we want are professionals who like to deliver service in that atmosphere. And they like to show initiative – being involved in every aspect of an account and having a personal understanding of the needs of the broker and the contractor.

“That leadership talent is what we offer our clients, and what provides a solid foundation for service and growth in Canada's economy. So we're excited about the future.

“We wish continued success and Christmas greetings to everyone as we move into 2014 and the opportunities and challenges it will bring to all of us.”

Once again Western Surety has drawn the name of a staff member who will select an organization to receive Western's Christmas charity donation.

Maggie chose Feed Nova Scotia as her charity.
