There was a lot to think about when Western Surety's President and CEO Scott Donald congratulated General Manager Neil Penner on his retirement earlier this month.

Despite a year of volatility in the Canadian economy, Neil, Scott and the Western team will likely achieve a record year for the company's underwriting bottom line.

The Atlantic office will be breaking its own premium records, and the Toronto office has welcomed new management, brokers and earned a much higher profile in the Ontario marketplace. New staff will also be announced for the Regina office in January.

"Stability, service and support are the key values for us," says Scott. "As we enter our 104th year, we've proven it's these values that have allowed us to continue our growth over the long term."

Scott says practicing these values requires constant attention.

"We conducted a 3-year strategic planning session this fall with a key initiative of guaranteeing our clients that they'd always get the best response time and customer service in the industry."

"As another example, we have committed to investment in new technologies for a faster, paperless environment, including expanded services based on immediate web access.

"While we never like to see our respected competitors have major issues, several are undergoing temporary challenges at this time – major claims, unique mergers/acquisitions, senior managerial changes and a general lack of quality surety personnel – we are blessed that our three offices enter the Christmas season and New Year with a strong employee base and stability, and are operating on a rock-solid foundation that has been in place for over 100 years.

"On top of that, we're honoured to have great clients, brokers and reinsurers. On behalf of the entire staff at WSC, I wish you a very Merry Christmas season and we look forward to a New Year of continuing great business relationships."

For the second year, Western Surety has drawn a staff name for the honour of selecting which organization receives Western's Christmas charity donation.

This year Brent Oshanek, Senior Regional Manager for British Columbia, won the draw, and selected the Alzheimer's Society of Canada.
