A Focus on the Mother Teresa Middle School

Last year, 2019, saw Western Surety support well deserving organizations across the country as part of the celebrations of our 110th year in business. As part of our commitment to giving back to the community, during the course of the year, we made three donations of $1,909 (1909 being our first year in business) to charities across the country whose programs support and enrich the lives of children. We made a fourth contribution in December of 2019 to finish out the year with $2,019 to the Mother Teresa Middle School in Regina. Many of our E-zine recipients responded with curiosity to explore the school.

Mother Teresa Middle School provides an enhanced, faith-based middle school education for Regina’s vulnerable inner-city youth in grades 6-8. They aim to help break the cycle of poverty among its target families and strive to create “Men and Women for Others” by nurturing students with hope and confidence, to apply knowledge with a moral conscience in a digital world.

While the Hill Family had been involved in charity/philanthropy work for many decades, I’ve been told that one of the highlights for Paul and Carol Hill was a trip in the 1990s to visit Mother Teresa. The WSC shareholder and his wife were deeply moved by Mother Teresa’s message and were inspired by her words. She spoke of simply “identifying a need in your community and then give of yourself and your resources to fill this need.”

In 2007, the seeds for the school in Regina were planted, led by Paul Hill and assisted by numerous local partners, including the University of Regina. In 2011, the doors of the Mother Teresa Middle School were officially opened. Ultimately the school is patterned after the USA based NativityMiguel Network of Schools, an association that was designed to provide families struggling in impoverished neighbourhoods with a high-quality school for their children.

As a life-long Regina resident, I am well-aware of those in our community who have felt that they could never see a way out. The Mother Teresa Middle School aims to break the cycle of poverty through education for disadvantaged youth in Regina. As President and CEO of Western Surety, I am proud and honoured to support the great works of the Mother Teresa Middle School and the positive difference they are making in children’s lives right here in our community.

I had planned to attend the Mother Teresa Middle School 2020 Promotion Ceremony however the world’s current complications lead to a virtual celebration; a happy one as you can see below! On behalf of Western Surety, I congratulate the graduates and wish them all the best in their future endeavours.
